In 1971 she visited China and discovered cloisonné, a technique which requires forming designs out of thin strips of metal & then filling in the open areas with enamel, leaving the metal strips exposed. Burch mostly concentrated on earrings. In 1979 she split with her business partner & started Laurel Burch, Inc. Early designs were Asian-inspired & signed "Laurel Burch" in script.
